CHANGE OF DATE TO SUNDAY 14TH NOVEMBER
CHANGE OF DATE - SUFFERING CHURCH SUNDAY IN THE BRITISH ORTHODOX CHURCH OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR, BOURNEMOUTH, MOVED TO SUNDAY 14TH NOVEMBER
I had originally planned to hold this on 21st this year but have brought it forward to Sunday 14th November.
The change in date came over several days⦠I received an email in which I learned that His Grace Bishop Angaelos had asked for three days of prayer for the peace and safety of our brothers and sisters in Egypt. Then I remembered that we would be starting the forty three days of fasting and preparation for Christmas very soon and I recalled that the reason in the Coptic Orthodox Patriarchate for the addition of three days onto the original forty days Advent Fast is in remembrance of the three days of fasting and prayer in the time of Pope Saint Abraam and Saint Simon the Tanner when God delivered the Church through the miracle of the moving of the Mokattam mountain in another period of persecution and threat hanging over the Church. I thought how appropriate and relevant it would be during these three days this year to pray for our Mother Church, the Coptic Orthodox Church in this current time of persecution with threats once again hanging over her.
Then I received from Father Peter Farrington St Albanâs Orthodox Church Newsletter in which he too wrote of the origins of these three days of fasting and continued: âThe Coptic Orthodox Church has not ceased to be under threat from those who wish to destroy her, and in these last few days and weeks many Islamic extremists and websites have been calling for the murder of Coptic Christians and the destruction of Coptic, and indeed any Christian Churches. Let us offer our prayers and fasting for the safety of the Church in the Middle East. There are brothers and sisters in the Faith who face martyrdom each day, and they need our prayers.â So itâs thank you to Father Peter for this confirmation of my own thinking.
During the three days Friday 12th to Sunday 14th November, I ask for prayer for the Coptic Orthodox Church â and also for the Syrian Orthodox Church in Iraq and all the persecuted and suffering Christians in Iraq and throughout that whole region. We will conclude the three days on Sunday 14th November with our observance of Suffering Church Sunday.
