Building an African School

Building an African School
British Orthodox subdeacon Peter Farrington and a work colleague Chris Irons have challenged themselves to walk 100km in April 2008 to raise over ?4000 to help build a school in rural East Africa. Chris has taken part in other challenges but Peter will need to get fit over the next few months if he is to complete the walk successfully. The route they are following is from Melrose in Scotland to Lindisfarne in North-East England.

They are walking to support the charity Build Africa, which has been helping communities in Africa to provide an education for their children since 1978. Build Africa finds schools which are in desperate need, organises local committees to discover the local needs, and then provides resources to improve and build classrooms and other buildings, and improve the quality of the education provided.

Peter and Chris have created a website at which they have just launched and will be regularly updating.

If anyone feel able to support this effort then there are links on the site to a secure sponsorship collection website where sponsorship can be made online.

Every little will help Peter and Chris reach their target, and will help African children receive a decent education.

Dear friends,

We've managed to find some time to redesign the website supporting our challenge.

If you have time, do visit

You will see that we have managed to gain the support of a variety of public figures. And I have managed to use the external impetus of trying to help an African community to lose 7lbs in weight over the last couple of weeks.

Those of you who know me know that I need to lose a couple of stone.

I keep getting challenged by the passage in Our Daily Life which says...

Abba Daniel states: ?The fatter the body, the weaker the soul, while
the leaner the body, the stronger it becomes?.The more a body slims,
the more a soul becomes lean, and the leaner it is, the more ardent it

Dear friends,

Well by some miracle I managed to walk the length of the St Cuthbert's Way last week, finishing at Lindisfarne on Sunday.

My colleague and I pushed ourselves on the first day and that rather put a strain on my knees which meant I was in some pain and discomfort for the other days. But somehow, through the prayers of supporters and my own at every step, I did manage to complete the 100km challenge, which was a real challenge to me in many ways.

I don't think I would have finished the walk without my companion, Chris, who kept me going over the four days without ever becoming exasperated at my slowness - especially coming down any steep slopes - and never rushed ahead.

We have raised nearly ?1500 which will help build a school in an African village, and pictures and further description of our effort will appear on our website at

Thanks again for your support
