Coptic veneration of Mary - Antony-Paul - 24-04-2011 09:40 AM

I am fairly new to the BOC and doing a course in Orthodox studies. I have some 'standard' texts such as Gambero, Pelikan and Maximovitch, but these are essentially Byzantine in outlook. Can anyone either offer some thoughts on specifically Coptic devotion to Mary, or perhaps direct me to English language publications which may help.

Many thanks for your help.

At the risk of stating the obvious but I'd rather state the obvious than risk missing it! The British Orthodox Church edition of Morning and Evening Incense includes several Doxologies to the Virgin Mary: "Hail to Thee, we ask thee O saint full of grace, the Ever-Virgin...", "The adornment of Mary, in the highest heavens...", "Blessed art thou, O Mary...", "Regard us from on high..." and from the Introduction to the Creed, "We magnify thee, O Mother of the true Light..."

The Coptic Orthodox month of Kiahk (in which falls Christmas) has hymns for St Mary (text hopefully available online). Tadros Malaty's book on St Mary in the Coptic Tradition may also hopefully be available online.

The 21st of each Coptic month is a Feast Day for St Mary. The Feasts of the Dormition and the Assumption (celebrated either as the Assumption in the Roman Catholic Church or the Dormition in the Byzantine Orthodox) are still celebrated as two distinct Feasts at different itmes of year in the Coptic and Ethiopian Churches. The Feast of the Assumption is preceeded by St Mary's Fast of 15 days only exceeded in length by Lent, Advent (and some years, depending on how early Pascha falls, by the Apostles' Fast) which gives some idea of the high importance of this Feast.

The Lectionary provides the following readings for Feasts of St Mary -

Evening Incense:
Psalm "Glorious things are spoken of thee: O city of God. The Most High Himself hath founded her: How joyous are all they that have their habitation in Thee. Alleluia."
Gospel Luke 10:38-42

Morning Incense:
Psalm "Even as we have heard, so too have we seen: in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised: in the city of our God, in His holy mountain. Alleluia."
Gospel Matthew 12:35-50

Divine Liturgy:
Pauline Hebrews 9:1-12
Catholicon 2John: 1-13
Praxis Acts 1:1-14
Psalm "And Him shall the daughter of Tyre worship with gifts: the rich among the people shall entreat thy countenance. All her glory is that of the daughter of the King: robed as she is in golden fringed garments. Alleluia."
Gospel Luke 1:39-56

It should be noted that the Feast of the Annunciation in the Coptic Orthodox Tradition is not a Feast of St Mary but one of the 7 Major Feasts of Christ. The readings however may be of interest.

Evening Incense:
Psalm ".O Lord, bow the heavens and come down: Touch the mountains, and they shall smoke. Send forth Thy hand from on high: rescue and deliver me. Alleluia."
Gospel Luke 7:36-50

Morning Incense:
Psalm "He shall come down as rain upon a fleece: and as raindrops falling on the earth. In His days shall righteousness spring up: and an abundance of peace. Alleluia."
Gospel Luke 11:20-28

Divine Liturgy:
Pauline Romans 3:1 – 4:3
Catholicon 1John 1:1 –2:6
Praxis Acts 7:23-34
Psalm "Hearken, O daughter, and see and incline thine ear: and forget thine own people and thy father’s house. For the king hath greatly desired thy beauty: for He is thy Lord, and thou shalt worship Him. Alleluia."
Gospel Luke 1:26-38
