Death of Abba Marcos of France - Severus - 13-05-2008 07:49 AM
Abba Seraphim has issued the following statement:
"Yesterday I received the sad news of the death on Sunday, 11 May of my dear brother in Christ Metropolitan Marcos of the Eglise Copte Orthodoxe Francaise. He was consecrated a bishop of the Coptic Church in 1974 and twenty years later we were ordained as Metropolitans together in Cairo.
As our sister jurisdiction in Western Europe we co-operated fully in every way and remained in close touch over many common concerns. He will be greatly missed.
I have sent my condolences to his associate, Bishop Athanasius, and also assured him of the prayers of all British Orthodox congregations for the repose of Abba Marcos and for the clergy and people of his jurisdiction.

In his letter to Bishop Athanasius offering heartfelt sympathy at the passing of Abba Marcos as well as assurance of prayers and those of the British Orthodox Church for his repose, Abba Seraphim also wrote:
" I am told that many of the Coptic websites in Arabic are already full of messages expressing grief at his passing and praising his many years of devoted service to the Coptic Church. I am delighted that his ministry is so widely recognised as great responsibility for the spread of the Coptic Church in Europe belongs with him. If the Copts have much for which to thank him, then so do many others. His warm ecumenical spirit and open hearted approach to other Christians was not only a good witness to our own church but also helped others to discover the spiritual riches of the Coptic tradition. Having cared for a generation of Copts settled in France, he then extended his ministry beyond the diaspora and brought the Coptic Church to Europeans who desired to embrace the Faith.
My own memories of him over the years are many and happy. He was a generous and warm-hearted companion; gracious in his speech and manner; kind to those who sought his help; discerning of the riches of our Christian heritage, whether Eastern or Western and with a humble simplicity which drew people to him. I value the good spirit which enabled us to co-operate fully at all times, to discuss our concerns and to agree a common mind in mutual practical and prayerful support. I shall miss him."

We will keep Metropolitan Marcos and his clergy and people close to our hearts at this sad time. I had the pleasure to meet him and +Athanasius and some of his French congregation in Cairo last May.
I am sure that he will be very much missed by all in the Coptic Middle East and in Europe.
God Bless you to at this Time.

I first met Abba Marcos in Cairo in 1994 and over the years since then have met him in England, in France and on various visits to Egypt. Whenever I sought a blessing at his hands he always greeted me with a delightful, warm smile. I found him unfailingly gracious and gentle with an air of calmness and quiet beauty.
I am the richer and the more blessed for having known him.
Abba Marcos Memory Eternal!

I too met Abba Marcos in Egypt, on my first visit there. I remember him as a warm and gentle man; I am sure a man of deep prayer and a true man of God. He talked to me at some length and impressed on me the conviction that the Christian faith was about love or it was nothing. I will never forget it. He will be sadly missed by his people, by the wider Coptic Orthodox community and by all who had the privilege to meet him.
The Departure of Abba Marcos - Severus - 18-05-2008 09:07 PM
Abba Seraphim has asked that I should make available the following report sent to him by his Egyptian Secretary, Shenouda Mamdouh Abdou:
"I just came from the airport where I received Abba Athanasios who came from France after the recent departure of Metropolitan Marcos.
I learned that the late Abba Marcos had suffered from pain in the chest over the past year. Last Tuesday 6-May they were supposed to go to Barcelona to deliver a lecture about the Coptic Church. The person who was supposed to collect them was late, so Abba Marcos decided to take the train. It was a very comfortable wagon and he calmly slept for the whole journey. Arriving in Barcelona, he was feeling fine but had a big pain in his chest. His hosts rushed him to the nearby well-equipped hospital.
From Tuesday till Saturday he has a doing fine, rested and prayed. In hospital he was healthy and alert and took the chance to read a book. On Sunday, Abba Athanasios had to travel to pray to return and back at night. It is there that he learned about the departure of Abba Marcos around 10h30 in the morning. It was Western Pentecost. It is suggested that the late Abba Marcos suffered an angina which was not treated and due to rest moved through the body until it caused a stroke on Sunday morning. Although the shock was painful because we shall be separated from him, it was a quick end without much pain and the Lord prepared everything. Pope Shenouda sent Bishops Bassilios and Abraam to help and according to Abba Marcos' will, his body was transferred to Egypt to be buried at St Bishoy's Monastery.
Sunday evening the phones were ringing in Barcelona from round the world. Bishop Athanasios thanks you for your call and your condolences. This evening (Sunday 18-May) at 20h00, the Bishops accompanied Bishop Athanasios to Egypt where they were received by some friends. They rushed to St Mark Centre before meeting HH tonight. Tomorrow, the funeral will take place at St Mark Cathedral in Cairo."
